SUMMARY:Queer Along the River: South London LGBTQ+ History and Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Catherine Hahn in a history and drawing workshop on queer South London.\n\n\nJoin Dr Catherine Hahn in a history and drawing workshop on queer South London. \nYou will learn about LGBTQ+ South London history starting in the 17th century\, then use a variety of drawing methods and experiments to recall queer pasts. \nAbout this event \nThe workshop reclaims diverse\, working-class LGBTQ+ South East London history through local stories and drawing. In doing so\, it challenges Victorian accounts of poverty and crime that served as cultural erasure in the area. \n In the workshop\, we will explore how drawing methods can revive queer history. Art produced in Queer Along the River will be shown in Deptford Lounge for LGBTQ+ History month in February 2026. \nTogether\, we will put South London’s LGBTQ+ heritage on the map! \nAny level of art experience\, including none\, is welcome. \nHistoric resources\, art material and support will be provided. \nAbout the facilitator \nDr Catherine Hahn (she/her) is an artist and social researcher and has taught extensively in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and Art History at the University of Kent. Catherine has facilitated collaborative art workshops for many years. \nShe draws on her personal experience and research on queer South London for the tour. \nAccessibility \nThe Centre’s accessibility statement is here. \nCovid-19 safety at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre \nTo keep our community safe\, we ask that all visitors do not visit the Centre if they are feeling any Covid-19 symptoms including headache\, fever\, sore throat\, consistent cough\, and chills. \nFor current information on Covid please visit the NHS website. \nDonate to the Centre \nWe rely on donations to ensure that the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre can keep its doors open for years to come. \nTo donate or become a Friend of the Centre\, visit our website.

DESCRIPTION:Bridge the generation gap! Enjoy a relaxed Sunday afternoon tea and get to know older and younger people\, aged 18-118.\n\n\nBridge the generation gap! Enjoy a relaxed sunday afternoon tea with the gay grandpersons. Get to know older and younger people\, aged 18-118! With facilitated discussions and different topics and activities each month. \nSunday October 19 – The Gay Bar Graveyard \nAs the leaves begin to fall in October\, we are brought to reflect on spaces\, venues\, events\, and people who are no longer with us. \nSubcultures\, symbols\, and spaces are what brings a lot of LGBTQ+ people together! How do you know someone is part of the community? How did you know back in the day? Were you or have you been part of any LGBTQ+ specific subcultures? Join us in this\, honouring\, sharing\, and connect with other LGBTQ+ people of diverse generations. \nSunday 16 November – From Lonely Hearts to Grinder \nA discussion about the different ways we’ve found each other for love\, connection and community through time. \nYou can expect: \n\nWelcome and introduction in a big group\nConversations in small groups about your experiences with dating\, cruising\, finding queer friends\, community spaces and generally how you’ve found other lgbtq+ people\nReturning to the big group to discuss all together\nYou are welcome to come along just to listen if you’re shy to share\, but bring along your stories if you can 🙂\nFrom the discussion we will add to a display sharing different ways of meeting other LGBTQIA+ folk\n\n \nAbout the facilitators \nBrixton Umbrella Circle is an independent\, peer led\, self-help group for older (50+) LGBTQ’s. It offers a forum for mutual support\, socialising and addressing individual and collective experiences (past and current) in a social\, cultural and political context. \nUmbrellas provide shelter and is used as a term for covering all – and because our hearts and minds can be like umbrellas – useless if we do not open them. \nPatrick (he/him) is a Mexican Stone Butch Drag King\, facilitating the meetup on Sunday 19 October. He is passionate about queer night life and subcultures\, especially intergenerational and multicultural events. \nKim (they/them) from A Whole Orange Matchmaking is facilitating the meetup on Sunday 16 November.
