SUMMARY:Sip and Stitch: Scrap Textile Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A beginner’s introduction to the world of abstract and experimental collage with textiles.\n\n\nA beginner’s introduction to the world of abstract and experimental collage with textiles. \nThis workshop begins with an overview of basic embroidery stitches followed by collage exploration using scrap and discarded textile materials. Freely explore a material or idea using intuition and creative stitching techniques in an inclusive and encouraging environment. Develop the confidence to engage with textiles in a therapeutic way\, and meet more like minded creative queer people in the process! \nBoth beginners and those with experience are welcome. \nPhotos in the image slider from facilitator Cristina Rago. \nAbout the facilitator \nCristina Rago (they/them) is a trans non-binary Filipino American multidisciplinary artist. Their artistic practice spans painting\, textiles\, and mixed media to explore identity integration\, healing\, and reparation from a queer perspective. \nTheir textile pieces often utilise domestic materials including discarded clothes\, cheesecloth\, and doilies that are reworked through processes such as dyeing\, destruction and mending. \nThis cyclical process becomes a holistic act of self-reckoning\, and an integration of past selves and thought patterns with the present. \nCristina works with individuals to foster their creativity through mentorship\, guidance\, and practical workshops. They work out of their studio in Wandsworth\, London.. \nAccessibility \nThe Centre’s accessibility statement is here. \nCovid-19 safety at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre \nTo keep our community safe\, we ask that all visitors do not visit the Centre if they are feeling any Covid-19 symptoms including headache\, fever\, sore throat\, consistent cough\, and chills. \nFor current information on Covid please visit the NHS website. \nDonate to the Centre \nWe rely on donations to ensure that the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre can keep its doors open for years to come. \nTo donate or become a Friend of the Centre\, visit our website.

SUMMARY:Trans Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:A space for trans and non-binary people to talk about death and mourning\, personally and collectively.\n\n\nJoin Trans Death Cafe\, as part of Queer Minds’ Trans Care Day on Sunday 23 November at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre. \nThis is a space for trans\, non-binary\, agender and any folks who identify under the trans umbrella to talk about death and mourning\, personally and collectively. \nAbout Trans Care Day \nThis event is part of a day organised by Queer Minds. The afternoon will include: \n\nFood from the Lovage Project\nSpectrum chest binders from G(END)ER SWAP\nRadar keys and other resources from Community Aid 4 Trans\nZines from London Zine Box\nVon-Luc: Massages – 1:30-5:30pm (no booking required)\nTitan Trims: Pop-up Barber – 1:30-5pm (no booking required)\nTrans Death Café led by Sukey Venables Fisher\n\nBookings are only required for the Trans Death Cafe event. The other events on during the day will work on a drop-in basis. \nWhat is a Death Cafe? \nAs a society we rarely discuss death\, even though its inevitability is the only thing we can predict in life. A Death Cafe is a useful forum for people coming to terms with a terminal illness and people caring for the dying. For any human being\, no matter what their stage in life\, an awareness of the presence of death can help us live our lives more fully. \nThe idea originated with the Swiss sociologist and anthropologist Bernard Crettaz\, who organized the first café mortel in 2004. Jon Underwood\, a UK web developer\, inspired by Crettaz’s work\, introduced the death cafe to London in 2011. \nA Death Cafe is not a physical location but an event\, sometimes irl\, sometimes online\, ideally with tea and cake to help create a nurturing and supportive environment. \nThe size of a group varies\, as do topics: there are no pre-set rules other than respect for one another\, and nothing is off limits. Holding space is often important. Sometimes a Death Café can be a very funny place – after all we’re here to lift the lid off the greatest taboo. Some people come to the same Death Café regularly. For others one visit provides the insight they needed\, when it was needed most. For most perhaps\, it’s a place to know is there\, and dip in and out of when that feels right. \nHow do trans and CIS death and end of life differ? How much does that matter? What other lives do we touch at the end of our own\, how is that experienced in our community\, especially when we’re in the middle of mass assaults on our right to exist? \nAbout the facilitator \nSukey Venables Fisher is a trained end of life doula\, with Living Well Dying Well\, and a trans community leader\, including a London Trans+ Pride organiser and TUC Trans Rights Alliance chair. \nSukey makes a living as a screenwriter and is really looking forward to pulling the various strands of life together in this space. Sukey hopes it can be an idea with a future for our community.

SUMMARY:Queer Spellcasting: Poetry as Vigil
DESCRIPTION:In Poetry as Vigil\, we will explore how our words and writing can hold loving space for queer ancestors who need it\n\n\nIn ‘Poetry as Vigil’ we will explore how our words and writing can hold loving space for queer ancestors who need it – you may know them personally or not. The workshop will unfold in 3 parts: \nWe will start with invoking an ancestral guide\, who can act as a higher power to support us and bridge our vigil. This guide can be a blood or a queer ancestor\, an ancestor of lineage who inspires you or an elemental. \nIn part 2\, we will hold solidarity\, loving presence and acknowledgement through writing to a personal ancestor who may have died in troubled ways\, or who simply needs support. You can devote your poem to them\, write them a letter\, or make your words into offerings. Your ancestral guide will always sit in between you and the ancestor you hold vigil for\, in order to offer you protection and grounding. \nIn part 3\, we will explore collective spellcasting by going in the circle and creating a communal poem-offering to the dead\, with phrases from what we have written\, our breath and whispers. \nWe will use divination and tarot to inspire our journey and help us connect beyond the realms. There will also be a soil altar which we will charge with our offerings and bring back to the body of the earth\, so the ancestors can receive this sustenance through the mycelium. \nThis series is inspired by my work and research into ancestral healing practices\, queer temporality and ritual as a futuring technology. \nNo prior experience needed – this will be a welcoming space of co-creation with soft invitations and guidance to be adjusted to your needs and intuitive desires. Everything is invitational\, focused on autonomy and consent\, and you are deeply encouraged to make the journey yours. There will also be a small space in the room where you can go anytime if you need some time by yourself\, or if the communal space feels overstimulating. \nAbout the facilitator \nByuka Makodru aka Fortune Tailed Beast (they/them) is a migrant performance artist and witch\, playing at the intersections of poetry\, dance\, film and tattooing. Their work explores folk futurism and practices of queer-animist world-building through community rituals\, speculative fiction\, embodied ecologies and ancestral healing. \nByuka is the curator and main facilitator of Lunarrr Playgroundz – a platform exploring ritual practices for the queer community. Queer Spellcasting is an ongoing research as part of their tattooing project Scribe of Earth Skins\, where they blend ritual\, language and symbol making. \nTheir work has been shown at the Royal Albert Hall\, Iklektik\, Camden’s People Theatre\, the National Gallery\, Barbican\, Guildhall\, Ugly Duck and Mimosa House. They have been featured in the series\, Witch\, on BBC Sounds. \nAccessibility \nThere will be a break halfway through\, and people are invited to break whenever they need. People do not need to stand\, we will be seating at tables. \nThere will be a communal circle at the beginning and at the end – first to share your name and something about you\, secondly to share words or sentences from what you have written\, so we can create a communal spell. \nNeither of these are mandatory and people are invited to be non-verbal if they need\, or participate in the circle by sharing a sound. People can bring stim toys and whatever support they need for the session. \nThe Centre’s accessibility statement is here. \nCovid safety at the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre \nTo keep our community safe\, we ask that all visitors do not visit the centre if they are feeling any Covid-19 symptoms including headache\, fever\, sore throat\, consistent cough and chills. \nYou can wear a mask if you feel more comfortable.
