Social Media Manager Volunteer

We have an incredibly exciting opportunity to be part of the LGBTQ+ Community Centre team. We have an incredibly exciting year ahead of us, with huge plans kicking off in the coming months.

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Social Media Manager to join our team of volunteers. You will be passionate about social media, an excellent copywriter and digital storyteller with basic graphic design and photography skills.

We estimate that the role will need a commitment of between 4-8 hours per week. We are able to cover reasonable travel and lunch expenses.

Volunteer role description

Title: Social Media Manager

Accountable to: Communications Director, Comms Project Lead

Role purpose and core accountabilities

As a community-led organisation, we rely on the dedication, passion and determination of a strong team of volunteers who bring a diverse range of skills, interests and lived experiences to the table. As a member of our Communications working group, you will be part of a team responsible for social media communications that will be key in setting up a pioneering space in London that meets the needs of our LGBTQ+ communities.

Your tasks will include:

  • Ideating and drafting social media content in line with the communications strategy
  • Ensuring our content is inclusive, diverse, accessible and in line with our values
  • Creating and editing social media assets, including photography
  • Developing and upholding a strong brand and tone of voice 
  • Signing off and posting content on social media channels
  • Community management: responding to legitimate comments and messages
  • Communicating with supporters and donors through engaging email marketing, data management and list growth
  • Collaborating with other comms volunteers on content ideas as well as other workstreams such as video, web, press
  • Advising on industry trends and the right tools to use to reach our audience
  • Analysing content performance on a regular basis and making data-led optimisations and improvements

Person specification

  • A social media expert with experience of running digital channels (public-facing or personal.) 
  • Experience of using a wide range of social media platforms, ideally for marketing campaigns, customer service or PR/communications. 
  • Experience of working with press, marketing or comms teams and a basic understanding of communications principles as well as social media and visuals/design best practice (including accessibility.) 
  • Excellent communicator, capable of working without direct supervision.
  • Understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, intersectionality, community organising and the role of communications within these contexts.
  • A commitment to our values of inclusion, diversity, and equality for all. 

Time commitment

We understand that your time commitment might vary, and can generally be adapted to suit your schedule. At the same time, we ask that if you can no longer make the indicative time commitment above, or would prefer a different arrangement, that you give the Centre reasonable notice so we can make alternative arrangements.

We would expect you to:

  • attend a fortnightly update meeting to stay up to date with recent Communications action and to update the team on any progress achieved
  • keep the team updated whenever you will not be able to complete your assigned tasks to ensure the overall goals are not compromised
