Music Improvisation Circle

October 24 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

An open invitation for us to form a community music improvisation circle, with a focus on communication and togetherness.

This workshop is an open invitation for us to form a community music improvisation circle. The circle will be a non-hierarchical, experimental space for community members to come together and re-imagine through improvisation, with a focus on communication and togetherness. You’re invited to come with musical ideas and creative prompts in any medium, that we’ll use as inspiration points to work from.

We start from the belief that everyone is a musician, and that improvisation is a mode of interaction that we are constantly rehearsing in life.

So while we actively welcome musicians, and encourage you to bring instruments and your voice, you can also come for example as an artist who wants to explore sound from a visual starting point, or as someone who’s read a poem that really resonated and wants to bring it to life through musical improvisation using percussion on everyday objects.

Your ideas are welcome to shape and create the space together.

The group will run for 90 minutes, with a 15-minute break in the middle, and anyone who needs to take breaks throughout can do so as they wish.

Those who sign up will receive another email closer to the time with more details, and you are actively encouraged to get in touch at [email protected] if you have any other questions we can pass onto Fatima, the Circle’s facilitator.

Ticket sales from this event will be donated by the facilitator towards Nation Station, an NGO in the heart of Beirut in Lebanon. They’re currently doing everything they can to provide meals and other amenities to the estimated 1,000,000 recently displaced Lebanese people.

About the facilitator:

Fatima (all pronouns) is an improviser and community musician based in London.

Their musical influences include baroque music, Arabic music, and free improvisation, and in 2022, they released their first album, ‘bulbul’, which tells stories about birds, voices, home, and the spaces in between.

They’ve performed as a soloist and ensemble musician all over the UK and Europe, and as a community musician, they work regularly in care homes, hospitals, SEND schools, theatres, and community centres.

They believe improvisation has the potential to allow us to imagine otherwise through sound, and are excited to continue to explore this in community.
