whereas now home is something
we’re looking forward to

we built it together
from what was once discarded
out of candy floss sticks
and lint from the dryer drawer
babybel wax pushed into the corners
you know my favourite smell is the rubber
from a hot water bottle
and I know you will run down the street
in the night
towards a shouting man
to make sure a stranger knows she’s not alone
you make me braver
as an adult you worried about fires
as a child I worried about floods
I’m still letting the bath overflow sometimes

time to return

scare the day away
pull the moon down to meet us
pad downstairs like children
to roast chicken in the middle of the night
eat with our fingers
I’ll pass the salt
let you rest
