Roots ‘n’ Rhythms

March 14 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Join us at The Africa Centre for Roots ‘n Rhythms in partnership with The Blacker The Berry Project.

Roots ‘n Rhythms is where we showcase live music and performance from Black and African queer musicians and artists in London and beyond.

Over the past month, tsunami Tânia has been teaching us how to move to Kizomba – a vibrant Angolan dance style and music genre. To end the course, The Blacker The Berry Project is curating an evening of activities to celebrate the sounds, music and dance that shape Black Luso and Francophone identity and culture.

Here’s what to expect:

First Floor

7 – 10 | The Chill Corner where there will be board games, reading materials and recordings of people sharing on their relationship to the music and culture.

7:30 – 8:30 | A Gwo Ka drumming workshop by Zil’oka, where attendees will be able to immerse themselves in, and learn how to play the traditional sounds of the island of Guadeloupe.

9 – 10 | Djumbai – a reflection and reasoning space where attendees are prompted to gather & share their stories in an interactive experience, hosted by Kayla Mae.

10 – 11 | DJ set by DJ Manito. Music policy: Zouk, Konpa, Cabo Love, Kizomba, Semba, Afrohouse, Kuduro, Ndombolo, Coupe Decalé, Funaná.

Third Floor

7:30 – 9: Queer friendly Zouk workshop w/ Joyce-le
