Community art commission: what does the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre mean to you?

This summer we are giving the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre a new look and we’re searching for artists to take part in it!

Along with the accessible toilet rebuild in August 2025, we want to commission four artists from our community to make artwork for the light panels outside the Centre. There are two light panels with four sides (one side per person).

Prompts:

  • What makes the Centre feel like home?
  • What does queer community look like to you?
  • What does the Centre mean to you?
  • What does queer joy look like to you, and how does the Centre help make that joy possible?

The successful artists will receive a small grant of £1,000 that will cover:

  • £750 artist fee
  • £150 for materials
  • £100 for any time spent on admin and comms

The artwork can either be painted directly on the light panel or a canvas panel can be slid into it. If you’d prefer to paint on a canvas panel, we can provide the panel for you to purchase.

The funds to cover the costs behind this award were raised during BigGive’s Small Charity Week in June.

Artists will commit to:

  • Communicate swiftly with the Centre team during the lead-up to the installation (for example when you plan to paint or install at the Centre)
  • Complete the artwork during the month of August when the Centre is closed
  • Create social media content to promote their work and the Centre on social media

How to apply:

  • Please submit a rough concept drawing or sketch of your proposed artwork to this form by Sunday 27 July at 5pm
  • Please submit previous artwork examples (murals, paintings, etc.) alongside your concept
  • Please include some storytelling sharing with us the piece’s meaning and its connection to our space and mission as an organisation (max 200 word count)
  • The measurements of the panels are L: 73 cm x W: 91 cm
  • If you’d like to visit the Centre to look at the light panels, let us know!
